The Benefits and Considerations of Exercise in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes.
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is the fastest growing chronic disease affecting more than 3.2 million Australians (in 2005), with an estimated 275 new cases diagnosed each day. Adopting a healthy and physically active lifestyle can prevent 60% of T2DM cases. Regardless of the mode, exercise is highly beneficial for patients with T2DM as it delays the progression of the disease, improves glycaemic control, promote maintenance of a healthy body composition and minimises the risks associated with cardiovascular disease. Regular exercise should, therefore, be encouraged in such populations.
